Kakinada: An impressive parade by the police and a cultural show by schoolchildren marked the Republic Day celebrations at the Police Parade Grounds here on Saturday. Schoolchildren in large numbers witnessed the events.

Addressing the gathering after hoisting the national flag, District Collector M. Subrahmanyam said it was an occasion for the people to dedicate themselves to protecting the spirit of the Constitution and democracy and contribute their mite to all-round development.

East Godavari district achieved commendable progress in different spheres and efforts were on to improve the standards of living in the ensuing years. Emphasis was laid on irrigation on which the agriculture sector was dependent. Under Jala Yagnam, the existing infrastructure was being augmented to create fresh ayacut and new schemes were taken up to secure higher agricultural yields.

The Polavaram, Pushkar lift irrigation scheme and other projects were being focused upon, he said.

Due priority was given to providing employment under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS). Wage employment was provided to 4.15 lakh persons under the NREGS and a sum of Rs. 63.57 crores was disbursed as wages.

Mr. Subrahmanyam said housing ranked top on the government’s agenda. Efforts were on to reach the targets so that the housing needs of more people could be fulfilled in the future.

The district administration distributed crop loans amounting to Rs. 1,108 crores in the current financial year and higher allocations were made to the same. ‘Rythu mitra’ groups were formed through which farmers were educated about the ideal farm practices and other aspects.

The Collector went on to explain the performance on the land development, education, health care, social welfare and other sectors and called for collective efforts to take the district forward on the path of development.
