VISAKHAPATNAM: A poclain operator, V. Lakshman of Yelamanchili mandal, was injured when a leopard, probably from the Kambalakonda forest range, attacked him and bit his hands near NVP Law College in Madhuravada on Wednesday evening.

It also killed two goats, sources said. The injured person was undergoing treatment at a local hospital.

Visakhapatnam range Conservator of Forests P.V. Padmanabam said that there were at least seven leopards in the Kambalakonda range and the animals which normally sustain by killing goats, cattle calves, wild boars and spotted deers sometime come out of the forests in search of food.

Not a man-eater

This is the first such incident in the recent past of the animal attacking human beings, he said and ruled out the possibility that the animal could be a man eater.

Man-eaters normally attack the prey on the neck and kill them, he said adding that the forest department would take the incident seriously and keep traps with live baits at different locations frequented by the animal.
