A workshop on ‘The art of parenting' was organised by The Hindu in association with Shriram Panorama Hills at Visakha Valley School on Saturday. The workshop was aimed at educating the parents of students of classes VIII and IX on issues relating to adolescence and nutrition.

Psychologist Shalini Kocherla spoke on the challenges faced by an adolescent and the parents' role in guiding the child. Hs discussed the developmental processes which occur in adolescence with the impact of internal and external stimuli on adolescent development. She also offered tips for better parenting. “Effective parenting has never been more important to a family's success than it is today. Proper parenting shapes the coming generations,” she added.

Academic consultant and former Head of Department of Home Sciences, St. Joseph's College for Women, Dr. Suguna Kannan, spoke on the importance of nutrition in the overall development of the child. “The latest craze of maintaining size zero and adhering to austere diet control regime in order to get a slim figure will lead to nutritional deficiencies,” she added. She presented a daily eating guide for adolescents.

School principal P. Sharada Reddy appreciated the initiative taken by The Hindu and Shriram Panorama Hills for organising such workshops for parents. Regional General Manager of The Hindu T.V. Suresh, and Chief Marketing Officer of Shriram Properties Ltd. Prof. Gan Bhukta, were present at the workshop.
