APSRTC drivers and other staff resorted to a lightning strike here on Saturday protesting against the assault on a driver at Ulchala on the city outskirts.

The protesting crew parked the vehicles on the main road and refused to operate buses to the interior villages where hostile atmosphere prevailed against public transport. Long distance services too were disturbed for a few hours.

According to reports, a mob allegedly chased the APSRTC bus at Ulchala, 10 km from here, and beat up the driver accusing him of not stopping the vehicle at the Ulchala stop.

Around 30 persons are said to have been involved in the incident.

The crew complained that some of them were auto drivers who did not want public transport on the route.

The crew withdrew the protest and resumed services after a few hours following assurance from the Regional Manager and other higher ups.

Meanwhile, students too protested as a sequel to the APSRTC strike urging authorities not to cancel services on the pretext of Saturday’s incident as hundreds of students travelled by buses to reach colleges in city. Their education would be adversely affected if the services were withdrawn.

The RTC officials told the students that they had no intention to cancel services. Meanwhile, the APSRTC staff lodged a complaint with the police against the assailants.
