VIJAYAWADA: The Andhra Pradesh Federation of Trade Unions (APFTU) has said that contract workers who de-silted the outfall drain from Gandhi Hill to Vehicle Depot should be recruited as permanent sanitary workers in the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC).

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, APFTU city convener T. Poornachandra Rao and CPI(ML) district secretary M. Bhargavasri said that some 30 workers participated in de-silting works after One Town was flooded with rainwater last month. Of them, 20 were contract workers, and had an experience of de-silting drains earlier too. As per the assurance given by Vijayawada MP Lagadapati Rajagopal, these contract workers should be recruited as permanent staff in the corporation.
