The hostel built at a cost of Rs 5 crores

GUNTUR: The sprawling Sports Hostel on Acharya Nagarjuna University campus built at a cost of Rs.5 crores will be opened in the first week of April. Finance Minister K. Rosaiah will formally dedicate the facility to the student community.

The first-of-its-kind facility in the country, the hostel can accommodate more than 1,000 sportspersons, with separate accommodation facilities for coaches. The hostel would be run by the Department of Physical Education.Construction of the hostel commenced on February 10 last year and the first phase of the hostel has been completed within a year. University Vice-Chancellor V. Balamohandas said that a meeting of physical directors from various universities would be held from April 1, which would decide the sporting calendar of the universities.

He said that the sports hostel would give a fillip to the sporting activities of over 370 colleges affiliated to the ANU in Krishna, Guntur and Prakasam districts. Meanwhile, the Finance Committee meeting of the ANU will meet on Monday, which would ratify the budget for the year 2006-2007 and finalise the budget proposals for the year 2007-2008. The meet would be followed by Executive Council meet on March 23. The EC would deliberate over new proposals from the members.

The Academic Senate meeting would be held on March 28 that would finalise all the proposals for new courses and changes to draw the academic calendar for 2007-2008, according to Registrar K. Viyyanna Rao.
