Sravan Kumar, an ITI student, collapsed during the physical endurance test at Kotturu Tadepalli near Vijayawada
VIJAYAWADA: The physical endurance test for recruitment of police constables claimed one more life – this time on the outskirts of the city –on Tuesday.
Ch. Sravan Kumar, an ITI student, participating in a running race being conducted for applicants of police constable jobs collapsed and died at Kotturu Tadepalli, near here.
The tragedy forced the police to call off the selection process for the day.
On Monday, an aspirant died during a running race at the Mamnoor airstrip near Warangal after running for about 3 km. Sravan Kumar alias Shyam of Chittinagar was among the participants who commenced the run from Kotturu Tadepalli to Pamula Kaluva Gate, a distance of 5 km. When the finish was just a kilometre away, Shyam suddenly collapsed and complained of breathlessness.
He was immediately administered oxygen in an ambulance and rushed to the Government General Hospital where he was declared dead.
Doctors said there were indications of Shyam suffering from chronic breathing problem.
The police said that Shyam was the son of Yedukondalu, a sanitation worker, living in Chittinagar. After completing Intermediate, Shyam joined the Government ITI and was pursuing the diploma course.
With an aim to work as constable in the Police Department, Shyam focused on his physique and practised running two hours everyday at the railway stadium along with his friends Lokesh and Karimulla, who were eventually selected, and even had a trial run on Sunday morning.
Deputy Superintendent of Police U.V.S. Raju told media persons that they were considering the possibility of arranging ex gratia to the family members of Shyam.
The Kothapet police registered a case under Section 174 (suspicious death) of the Cr.P.C.
