Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited paid rich tributes to T. Amruta Rao, who along with others spearheaded the ‘Visakha Ukku Andhrula Hakku’ agitation for establishment of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, on the occasion of his 93rd birth anniversary on Monday.

Amurta Rao was on fast for 21 days during 1966 to press for locating the steel plant in the city. He was arrested several times for undertaking fast.

A Gandhian and noted freedom fighter, he was elected MLA from Thadikonda, the first SC reserved constituency in Guntur district in 1978. He was elected the first Chairman of AP State Scheduled Castes Finance Corporation.
