The State government is spending Rs.660 crore as subsidy for providing essential goods in addition to rice at reasonable price to people below the poverty line, Minister for Civil Supplies D. Sreedhar Babu has said.
Formally launching the Amma Hastam programme in Vijayawada Central Assembly Constituency, at Tummalapalli Kshetrayya Kalakshetram here on Saturday, the Minister said that the scheme was strategically launched to tackle the rising prices of essential goods in the open market and making them available to the poorest of the poor at subsidised prices.
About 90 per cent of the ration card-holders in the State were white card-holders and they were eligible for nine essential goods at Rs.185 a pack. In Krishna district, out of the 13 lakh ration cards 12 lakh were white cards and all of them were eligible for the subsidised supply of goods.
For the Re. 1 rice scheme, the State government was spending Rs.10,000 crore, the Minister added. In addition to this scheme, the Bangaru Thalli scheme was launched and ST/ST Sub-Plan funds were being spent for the welfare of those sections, he said.
Vijayawada Central MLA Malladi Vishnu, Vijayawada MP Lagadapati Rajagopal, district Collector Buddha Prakash M. Jyothi, and Joint Collector P. Usha Kumari were present on the occasion. They handed over the packets of essential goods to the beneficiaries.
Two large balloons were put up at the venue to highlight the schemes of the government.
