ONGOLE: Rice would be supplied at Rs. 2-a-kg to 7.41 lakh families, covering 84 per cent of the total number of families in the district, from April 9.

Speaking to newspersons, District Collector, K. Devanand, said that they would supply 11,083 tonnes of rice per month to white card holders, Annapurana and Antyodaya card holders. The subsidy burden would amount to Rs. 65 crore per year.

Arrangements have been made to supply rice to all card holders in two or three days after launching of the scheme, he said.

To a question, he said that new cards would not be issued now. Officials would however receive applications. Eligible applicants would be issued cards later. It is stated that pucca houses were sanctioned to about 70,000 families living below poverty line. But as many as 7,000 families could not get the house for want of white ration card!

Mr. Devanand said that Praja Padham would be held in the district from April 10 and Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, is likely to visit the district either on April 15 or 23. Officials would conduct gram sabhas in every village and address mainly six problems like drinking water, power supply, employment, aam admi bhima yojana, Rajiv Arogya Sri and 108 and 104 Services.

He said that all the representations received during last Praja Padham have been resolved.
