The National Handloom Expo sponsored by the Development Commissioner for Handlooms, Government of India, will be organised by the Commissioner of Handlooms, Textiles and Apparel Export Parks, Government of Andhra Pradesh, here for the first time from November 8 to 23.

The expo will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. from Tuesday and entry is free.

In-charge Commissioner of Handlooms, Textiles and Apparel Parks T. Ethirajulu addressing a press conference at Swaraj Maidan, the venue of the expo, here on Monday said that the expo was held in Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam previously.

Purpose of putting up the expo was to provide the weavers a direct marketing facility. Besides the 50 weavers' societies from the state, between five to ten societies from 18 different states in the country would put up for sale their handloom products in 200 stalls at the PWD Grounds, he said. The Commissioner said that the sales target set by the Government was Rs. 3 crore. While the sale in the Hyderabad expo surpassed the target, the sale in Visakhapatnam last year was Rs. 2.80 crore.

Union Minister or State for Textiles Panabaaka Lakshmi will inaugurate the expo. Regional Deputy Director A. Satyanarayana said that there will be different cultural programmes in the evening from 6.30 p.m. onwards everyday during the expo.
