Coal miners owing allegiance to the AITUC affiliated Singareni Collieries Workers Union, the recognised trade union of the Singareni Collieries, staged dharnas in front of all the coal mines in the district on Tuesday to press for implementation of a charter of 45 demands.
Sources said that the demonstrations were organised under the aegis of the AITUC as a prelude to the strike proposed by the recognised trade union after June 12, over their 45-point charter of demands.
Singareni Collieries Workers Union vice president Barigela Sailu and others participated in a dharna held in front of the Venkateshkhani underground mine (VK7 incline) in Kothagudem on Tuesday morning.
Speaking on the occasion, Sailu said that the union will undertake protest programmes featuring dharnas and relay hunger stirs up to June 12 in the entire coal belt spread across Khammam, Karimnagar, Warangal and Adilabad districts.
The union has embarked on the protest programme demanding implementation of long-pending demands including enhancement of profit linked bonus to 25 percent and service linked promotions, he said adding that the strike option would be exercised after reviewing the response from the management to our demands.
Meanwhile, the representatives of the Singareni management held discussions with the leaders of the recognised trade union in Kothagudem on Tuesday in an apparent attempt to avert the proposed strike.
