Call to fight for independent varsity
KURNOOL: All India Students Federation (AISF) threatened to take up an agitation if the degree colleges in Kurnool district were affiliated to the Yogi Vemana University proposed in Kadapa district.
In a statement, the AISF leaders N. Lenin Babu, Venkat Narayana and Laxminarayana Reddy said the AISF would welcome the decision to set up three universities in the State. But Kurnool district should not be brought under the Kadapa university.
They said Kurnool had a full-fledged PG centre long ago, which did not witness development in any way. The centre should have been upgraded to an autonomous university by this time as all other centres set up around the same time were upgraded.
They said Kurnool which was the first capital of Andhra State was ignored by the rulers for a long time. The AISF leaders called upon the MPs and MLAs to resign from their posts and join the struggle for an independent university.
Meanwhile, the CPI(M) district secretary T. Shadrak wondered why the PG centre was ignored by the successive governing bodies of the university. The party planned an agitation to press for autonomy for the PG centre as well as upgrading it to a university.
