All India Radio is going to launch its frequency modulation (FM) relay centre here on January 13. Union Minister for Human Resource Development M.M. Pallam Raju will formally open the centre at a function to be held at Suryakala Mandiram on Cinema Road at 10 a.m., in which elected representatives and officials from the district will take part.

Announcing this at a press conference here on Friday, programme head of the All India Radio, Visakhapatnam, V.Venkata Rani said that people in the vicinity of 15 km around Kakinada could listen to the FM programmes on 100.1 MHZ from 6 a.m. to 12 in the midnight daily. She said that programmes of the AIR’s Hyderabad FM relay centre would be transmitted here, as no full-fledged radio station is available locally.

After the inaugural session, light music by K.S. Chandrasekhar, Garaga dance by Lakshmi Durga, folk songs by Yadavalli Satya Varma and Tappetagullu by N. Satyam and troupe would be performed on the dais, Ms. Rani explained.

Deputy Directors (engineering) R. Harsha Latha, V.M. Ratna Prasad and staff artiste D. Dharma Rao were present.
