GUNTUR: Veteran athlete Vellithingal Vijaya, whose inspiring story appeared in columns of The Hindu, will be felicitated by Hyderabad-based Sun-Jay’s Tennis Academy on Saturday. Tennis coach M. Sanjay Kumar said on Monday that Ms. Vijaya would be felicitated at a function to be held on the academy premises on Road No 3, Banjara Hills, and a financial assistance of Rs.10,000 would be given to the athlete.
The tennis coach said that the academy had been honouring champions in various sporting disciplines and extending financial assistance to meet their needs.
After going through the article in these columns on October 8, he contacted Ms. Vijaya over telephone and invited for the felicitation function to be held in Hyderabad.
The veteran athlete, who had bagged 35 medals in various national and international competitions had been forced to eke out her livelihood, by working as a domestic maid and running a road side eatery.
She expressed her gratitude for bringing into light her struggle and her achievements in the sporting world. She assured that she would strive to win a medal for the country.
A leading Public Sector Unit has too evinced interest in sponsoring Ms. Vijaya, who would be representing the country at the Asian Masters Athletic Championship to be held at Bangkok in Thailand from December 1. Officials from the PSU on Monday contacted The Hindu and expressed their willingness to extend financial assistance and meet the expenses incurred for travelling and boarding.
Copies of the selection letter and her achievements had been faxed to their office.
