The sericulture industry received a jolt during in past months due to the ongoing Samaikhyandra agitation in Chittoor district.
The concentration of the silk cocoon trade is at Madanapalle market, which attracts buyers from the neighbouring districts and from Bangalore, Chennai and Coimbatore.
The silk production from Madanapalle division is considered to be of superior variety at the inter-State market.
Scores of silk farmers from various western mandals come to the Madanapalle market, with a business of over four tonnes daily.
The market staff has been on indefinite strike during the last one-and-a-half month in solidarity with the agitation, leading to the closure of the sales. The market has also lost lakhs of rupees due to non-collection of cess.
The silk farmers are forced to shift their stocks in bulk to the markets in the southern parts of Karnataka and Mysore, spending huge amounts for transport. They maintain that delay in dispatch of stocks would damage them.
