Users of Facebook should be careful before embarking on a ‘friends-making' spree on their Facebook page, because that could attract a lot of spam, which has immense nuisance value, says Director, User Operations for Facebook, India, Manoj Varghese.
“There is a limit of 5,000 friends because at any point of time, our users can only have meaningful relationship, communication, or contact, with a maximum of 150 to 200 contacts. Moreover, we at Facebook feel that the users should accept friends who they ‘really' know.
The Facebook pages are planned to have a lot of personal relationship between friends. One should also be wary of spam,” Mr. Varghese pointed out.
The Director (User Operations) of Facebook delivered a talk on ‘Building brands through social experiences' organised by Hyderabad Management Association here on Tuesday. “The idea behind Facebook is based on the on the concept of giving people power to express themselves and broadcast their opinions freely. Of course, we do moderation, but by and large, we have made sure that people have their voice,” he said.
Speaking on the impact of social medial websites on companies in building their brands, Mr. Varghese said that social media websites have become popular because of their unprecedented reach. “It is an accepted theory that word-of-mouth publicity is the ideal way to advertise. Now, the social media is the new word to mouth mode of publicity. If a Facebook user likes a product, then that information is passed on to all his friends,” he said.
Industries, news organisations, institutions, music sellers, gaming industry and many more are reorganising their business models around people who are using the Internet, he said.
The top official from Facebook also pointed out that technology innovations like smart phones; iPads etc. are accelerating the use of the social media.
Top officials from Hyderabad Management Association and management students from various colleges were present.
