HYDERABAD: Officials of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Vijayawada range, on Monday night seized Rs.110,365 following a surprise check on the Macherla Motor Vehicle Inspector’s office in Guntur district.
A press release from ACB here on Tuesday said the check revealed that MVI V. Venkateswara Rao was allegedly utilising the services of three private persons for collecting bribes from people who approached him for issue of vehicle licences/registrations.
The officials seized the bribe amount, including Rs. 29,500 from a briefcase hidden in his car.
The seized cash was five times the actual amount of Rs.19,255 which is the prescribed fee remitted to the Government.
The Government has dismissed V. Venkata Lakshmi, Project Director, Women and Child Welfare department, Eluru, in West Godavari district, as she has been convicted by the Special Judge for SPE and ACB Cases, Vijayawada.
She has been sentenced to one year’s simple imprisonment and fined Rs.1,000. In default she is to suffer three month’s simple imprisonment each for the offence under Section 7 and 13(2) read with 13(1) (D) of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Earlier, she was trapped by ACB on January 17, 2004, while accepting a bribe of Rs.10,000 for issuing a work order and placing indent for supply of broken wheat to nine project officers in the district.
