HYDERABAD: A gang of eight persons that allegedly planned kidnapping of rich businessmen for ransom, extortions and murders for gain was busted by Kushaiguda police of Cyberabad on Monday.

Among the eight arrested was S. Uma Maheswara Rao, 33, from Khammam, who was accused of masterminding several such offences earlier, Alwal Zone DCP G. Sudhir Babu told reporters. Rao and his associates had abducted a businessman Rajesh Agarwal and planned to extort Rs. 50 lakh from his family members to secure his release.

However, Agarwal managed to escape by jumping out of the vehicle in which he was being whisked away when it halted for traffic signal near Kushaiguda. As their plans went awry in Agarwal’s case, Rao hatched a plot to kill S. Jagan, Praja Rajyam leader in Nalgonda district and Satyanarayana Reddy, owner of a complex near Radhika theatre in Kushaiguda.

Other targets

The DCP explained that the gang also planned to kidnap many wealthy persons in and around Kushaiguda. It approaches watchmen and drivers of rich people and gathers details of the movements of the latter through them. Rao was first arrested in Khammam for snatching offence. Later, he committed three dacoities -two in Chandanagar and one at Jubilee Hills- with his accomplices. In Jubilee Hills dacoity, he made the victims unconscious by injecting sedatives.
