It was a thrilling and exciting experience for the students of Saibaba Central school, Ongole who got a rare opportunity to learn the basics of rock climbing and trekking at Patimedhapalem hills here from none other than ace mountaineer Malli Masthan Babu.

Much to the astonishment of the students, Mastan Babu, a Guinness book record holder for scaling the highest peaks in each of the seven continents in 172 days, introduced them to among other techniques, rappelling and jumering.

Divided the students into three teams namely Jaguars, Leopards and Wolves, Mastan Babu, “My aim is to introduce a child to mountaineering for every metre I climb.”

Rock climbing is one of the best sports to develop a child’s cognitive skills, adds the world class mountaineer who plans to scale one lakh metres this year in South America, among other places.

The Jaguars went for trekking on Friday, while the Leopards were taken to a different part of the hills for their training in rock climbing and Wolves were taken to be trained in rappelling and jumering.

“It is a wonderful experience for us to get training from Mastan Babu,” said a group of students enjoying every moment of their adventure activities.

Hectic schedule

After day-long hectic schedule, the students attended classes on leadership qualities and character building. Adventure-loving students learnt to pitch tents for an overnight stay for hiking in the forest. For many of 84 boys and girls, it was the first time they had been in a tent and without electricity.
