It was a moment to cherish for 75 couples. All the couples have completed their ‘shashtipoorthi' (60 years) and some were in their 70s.
Sri Guru Deva Charitable Trust of Mangalapalem organised the ‘shashtipoorthi' celebrations of the couples in a grand manner at Sri Gita Krishna Mandir at Chintalagraharam on Monday night.
The ‘shashtipoorthi' was conducted on the lines of traditional wedding with guests attending from the side of the bride and groom. The preparations began weeks ahead of the function. Cards were printed and distributed among the relatives.
The ‘weddings' were conducted amidst chanting of mantras and traditional wedding band.
People of the villages in the vicinity attended the function.
The trust gave ‘kanduvas' to the ‘grooms' and a blouse piece to each of the ‘brides'. Children and grandchildren of the couples presented gifts to the ‘newly weds'.
The programme was conducted under the auspices of trust chairman Raparthi Jagadeesh Babu.
TDP vice-president Bandaru Satyanararayana Murthy, who participated as chief guest, commended the trust for organising the event which would pep up the spirits of senior citizens. Visakhapatnam West MLA Malla Vijay Prasad, former MPP Kalla Varalakshmi and others also participated.
The trust also conducted a special programme at the Central Prison in connection with Janmastami. Sweets were distributed to the prisoners. Jail Superintendent Jayavardhan and Jailor Latchanna participated.
