Their world is built on the beauty of signs and silence. For the differently-abled youngsters who gathered on Sunday morning to celebrate the 53 {+r} {+d} International Week for the Deaf celebrations, it was not just any other occasion to rejoice and make merry. But it was a day to remember their strengths and bring forth the hidden talents in each of them.

Around 300 differently-abled people took part in the 53 {+r} {+d} International Week for the Deaf celebrations organised by Family Services at Hotel Daspalla on Sunday. During the event, they performed skits on the themes of unity, commitment and human values.

A skilfully enacted humorous skit was appreciated by the audience.

On the occasion, Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation Commissioner V.N. Vishnu, who was the chief guest, gave away the outstanding leader awards to those who committed themselves to the cause of the deaf and the dumb.

Training

He applauded the efforts of the organisation in imparting training to the differently-abled and promised to offer help in creating job opportunities in the government sector.

Family Services is involved in social and educational projects in Visakhapatnam and neighbouring districts of Kakinada, Vizianagaram, Tanuku and Srikakulam.

“We work among the deaf youth teaching them to communicate and adjust to society and overcome emotional and psychological effects,” said R. Mehra and Hema Mehra of Family Services.

Seminars

The organisation conducts classes and seminars in English language, English sign language and character building using visual aids, leadership training, computer education and childcare counselling. Their office is located at Visalakshinagar.
