‘Weight loss surgery would not only help the patients lose weight, but also cure their diabetes’
TIRUPATI: Bariatric surgery may be the cure for people who have Type 2 diabetes as weight loss remains the best medicine for this type of diabetes.
“When obesity is so severe that it threatens one’s health and affects the lifespan of the individual, bariatric surgery has proved to be the most effective method”, said Ravindran Kumeran, a leading Bariatric Surgeon at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai.
Delivering a talk on “Obesity and health-related issues” at The Apollo Clinic here on Sunday, Dr. Kumeran observed that shedding pounds could be difficult with diet and exercise alone for many obese persons and hence the need for bariatric surgery, also called as ‘gastric bypass surgery’. Pointing to latest research, he said weight loss surgery would not only help the patients lose weight, but also cure their diabetes.
He expressed concern over India topping the list in the prevalence of the disease the world over with a burden of more than 35.5 million people with diabetes. A third of diabetics in urban areas and half in the rural areas remain undetected, thanks to the asymptomatic nature of the disorder. “People do not go for diabetes test consciously and they are detected whenever they go for treatment of other illnesses”, he noted and cited it a reason for the proliferation of the disease under the carpet.
