The police seized 12 lorries laden with sandbags near Ramasamudram mandal headquarters, 40 km away from Madanapalle town, in the early hours of Wednesday and arrested eight persons on the charges of transporting sand illegally, while several others had fled. The Ramasamudram police said that the night-beat cops intercepted three lorries laden with sandbags on the Bangalore highway. In half an hour, nine more lorrieswere detained in the same route.
The police suspect that all lorries carrying the sand might have been loaded at the rivulet beds in Mulabhagal of Karnataka.
The police said that with the check post at Mulabhagal being on alert, sand smugglers are entering Chittoor near Palamaner to re-enter Karnataka at Srinivasapuram. The police also took eight persons into custody.
