VIJAYAWADA: The Patamata police on Tuesday arrested five persons, including a motorcycle mechanic, on the charge of stealing motorcycles from different parts of the city. They recovered from him 18 motorcycles estimated to cost about Rs. 5 lakhs.
Addressing a press conference here, Assistant Commissioner of Police (central zone) N. Ramachandra Murhty charged Garapati Suresh, 24, motorcycle mechanic of Syam Nagar, Pallikanda Krishnaiah, 24, of Ramalingeswara Nagar, Tella Nagarjuna, 23, of Yanamalakuduru and Savalam Vithal, 20, of Chitti Nagar with stealing motorcycles parked on the roadside and selling them to Tippa Durga Prasad, 26, of Ramavarappadu. Mr. Murthy charged the gang with stealing 14 Hero Honda motorcycles, a Honda Activa, a Bajaj Pulser, a Yamaha and a Bajaj Discovery from Patamata, Machavaram, Suryaraopet, Governorpet, Krishnalanka and Two-Town areas.
Leader of the gang Suresh was running a motorcycle mechanic shop near Hotel DV Manor and was arrested a few years ago on the charge of stealing an auto-rickshaw. Mr. Murthy said that the Patamata police and the Central Crime Station staff had got a tip-off that the members of the gang were trying to sell the stolen property near Ramavarappadu Ring Road on Tuesday morning. The police caught four members of the gang and seized five motorcycles from the spot. Later, they took into custody Durga Prasad.
