The Machavaram police have arrested four persons on charges of attempting to murder M. Venkaiah of New Jellapalli village and decamping with a gold ornament (vaddanam) worth Rs. 8 lakh.
DCP M. Ravindranath Babu, at a press conference here on Sunday, said Venkaiah was in the habit of searching for treasure troves. In the process, he met U. Karunakar of Karamchedu village and they both searched for treasure troves at many places.
In a bid to cash in on his passion for treasure troves, Karunakar told Venkaiah that a person named Kishore of Warangal had an ‘akshaya patra' (an inexhaustible vessel), which he was ready to sell for Rs. 5 lakh.
The DCP said Venkaiah offered to buy the article by giving his gold ornament instead of money. Meanwhile, Karunakar sketched a plan to take possession of the gold article by eliminating Venkaiah. He allegedly roped in three accomplices — Venkateswara Rao, Gopi, and Venkatesh — all native of Chebrolu in Guntur district, to accomplish the task.
The Special Investigation Team, comprising Machavaram CI N. Satyanandam, CCS CI Pavan Kumar Reddy, and other staff, arrested the accused on Sunday.
