Three persons including the driver of the Maruti van in which they were travelling were killed when it ploughed into a stationary APSRTC bus at Shamshabad on city outskirts in the small hours of Saturday.
The victims were members of a wedding decoration group from Bellary in Karnataka.
They started for Hyderabad from Bellary the previous night and travelled on the Bangalore-Hyderabad road (NH-7). They reached Shamshabad around 5.30 a.m.
“It looks like the driver dozed off having driven continuously throughout the night and rammed the bus parked on the roadside near Shapur village bus stop,” Shamshabad Inspector, C. Anjaiah, said. Sri Laxmi (35), a key member of the group and her relative Ramakrishna (32), were killed on the spot.
Van driver Basha (22), was rushed to Trident Hospital where he succumbed while undergoing treatment. Two others, T. Raghavendra Naik and Hanumanthu, escaped with minor wounds. Sri Laxmi and her group members were coming to the city to decorate marriage halls when the accident occurred.
