Meanwhile, on hearing the news, other contract workers came to the spot and raised slogans against the GVMC officials, who they alleged, had not taken proper care to ensure the safety of the workers. They were also critical of the GVMC officials for not reaching the spot for about an hour after the mishap.
Officials of the Police and Fire Departments were among the first to reach the spot.
The police led by Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Suresh Babu, ACP (Traffic) M. Raja Rao and ACP (North) C.M. Naidu prevented the situation from going out of control by diverting the traffic. GVMC Additional Commissioner (General) K. Ramesh and other officials reviewed the situation.
MLAs Tynala Vijay Kumar (Visakhapatnam North) and Malla Vijay Prasad (Visakhapatnam West), YSR Congress leaders Vamsikrishna Yadav and G.V. Ravi Raju and TDP leader Sanapala Panduranga Rao were among those who pacified the relatives of the victims.
The relatives agreed to shift the bodies after they were promised compensation of Rs.6 lakh, a house under the weaker sections scheme, if they do not own one and a job to a dependent of each of the victims. The bodies were shifted to the King George Hospital for post-mortem.
