Three boys drowned in a ‘nala' after trying to catch a cricket bat surfacing in the drain water at Chilukanagar of Uppal on Wednesday. Sai, 10, Teja, 9, and Karthik, 5, students of fifth, fourth and first standards respectively, were playing by the side of the ‘nala' when they saw a bat being washed away in the ‘nala' around 5 p.m. Karthik's elder brother Mahesh too was there along with them.
The four tried to pull the bat out of the water by walking along the ‘nala'. “At some point, one of them slipped into the water while the other two entered inside to rescue the first one,” the Uppal Inspector, R. Satyanarayana Raju, said. Mahesh rushed to an old man standing nearby screaming for help. By the time locals and the police rushed to the spot, the three boys were dead. Their bodies were fished out late in the night. Parents of the three boys are daily wage earners.
