`Kalyanamastu', the program of mass marriages, was successfully organized by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) on Friday.

A total of 161 couples got married in Guntur (69), Narsaraopet (59) and Tenali (33) divisions.

Housing Minister Kanna Lakshminarayana, Zilla Parishad chairperson K. Vijaya and In-charge Collector A. Sarath blessed the couples in Sri Venkateswara Swamy temple at Brundavan Gardens here.

Good response

Bhadrachalam, Yellendu and Dammapeta mandals, the predominantly tribal inhabited areas in the district, recorded an overwhelming number of mass marriages held under Kalyanamastu programme in the entire district.

A significant number of 854 mass marriages were held in Bhadrachalam centre.

Many couples of the impoverished tribal families utilised the TTD sponsored programme and got married on the auspicious occasion.

The programme featured a “second marriage” of an already married person and an unmarried woman in Khammam town and a few weddings involving “aged couples” in Yellendu and other mandals, sources said.

The police foiled an alleged attempt by a person to get second marriage at Kalyanamasthu in Yellendu mandal in the district.

Interestingly, a 23-year-old woman married a 27-year-old physically challenged youth at the mass marriage ceremony held in Wyra division. Sources said that a few couples of primitive tribal communities entered into wedlock with their kids in Dammapeta and some other mandals in the Agency area.

A record number of 3137 mass marriages were performed under Kalayanamasthu in the district on Friday.

Free passes issued

A total of 151 couples entered into wedlock in the TTD mass marriages programme held in 10 constituencies in the district.

The kalyanamandapams were decorated with thoranams and flower garlands in Nellore, Kavali, Gudur, Sullurpet, Venkatagiri, Kovur and other areas in the district for the programme.

Finance Minister Anam Ramnarayana Reddy presented marriage certificates, darshan tickets and four-day free passes issued by APSRTC to the newly wed couples in Nellore.
