Sixteen people, including three children, were killed and 10 suffered serious injuries when an North Eastern Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NEKRTC) bus collided with a mini-truck near Kodalhangarga village, 6 km from Aland town, on Monday.
All the dead, except the mini-truck driver Kamalakar, were blood relatives. They had started from their village Tadwal, 25 km from Akkalkot in Maharashtra, to the Khaja Banda Nawaz Dargah for “Haqeeqa” (tonsuring ceremony) of a child.
According to their relatives, the victims left the village around 1.30 a.m. and had planned to reach the dargah in the early hours.
According to the police, there were only two passengers in the bus, which was proceeding towards Jidga in Aland taluk from Sandur, when the accident occurred.
They said the bus driver did not have much rest for the past two days and the accident occurred while he tried to overtake another vehicle. The bus driver suffered serious injuries, and the conductor and the two passengers received minor injuries.
While 13 persons were killed on the spot, one died on the way to the Government General Hospital in Gulbarga and two others succumbed to their injuries in the government hospital here.
The condition of the 10 injured, who were initially admitted to the Government General Hospital here and then taken to a private hospital here and to Solapur in Maharashtra, was stated to be serious.
Minister for Municipal Administration and Wakf Qamarul Islam rushed to the spot and also visited the government hospital at Aland, where the bodies of 13 of the victims were kept, and consoled the family members.
Compensation of Rs. 1 lakh to the kin of each of the persons who died was announced.
The NEKRTC released Rs. 15,000 to the families of each of the victims towards funeral expenses and another Rs. 35,000 would also be paid to them by the NEKRTC.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who spoke to Mr. Qamarul Islam over phone, expressed grief over the accident and announced compensation from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
The dead have been identified as Moheemin Bi Nabi Sab (50), Nabi Sab (51), Ramzan Mulla (21), Basha Mulla (60), Mohsin Mulla (14), Hussain Mulla (20), Rihana Sheikh (30), Parveen Mulla (38), Noorjahan (30), Mumtaz Lavane (40), Sameer Mulla (8), Babashah Mulla (5), Zeenath (35), Reshma (8), Bismillah (45), and the mini-truck driver Kamalakar (40).
