BJP leader Jaswant Singh’s attempts to get ticket for contesting in Barmer in Rajasthan did not succeed. But star-turned-politician Shatrughan Sinha could succeed in making the party give him ticket again for Patna much against its wishes. The Bihar unit of the party, with the support of the RSS, made an attempt to replace him. The State unit’s case was that Mr. Sinha did not show much inclination to involve himself in the affairs of the party in the State and remained inaccessible for most of his previous tenure. Moreover, a survey commissioned by the party showed that Mr. Sinha was facing a strong anti-incumbency factor in the constituency. But Mr. Sinha apparently made it clear that in the event of not getting ticket, he would leave the party and campaign against it. As the discussion dragged on in the central election committee, senior leader Sushma Swaraj intervened to close the matter in Mr. Sinha’s favour.
