Three persons were killed and four injured in an accident involving three lorries at Yarikoppa village on the Pune-Bangalore National Highway (no. 4) bypass near Dharwad on Monday.
The police gave the names of the deceased as Appasaheb Pujar, Ratnappa Hirekodi and Nasruddin Mohammed Gouse Jamadar, all residents of Chikkodi in Belgaum district.
Two persons were killed on the spot while one died in hospital.
The injured have been admitted to the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) Hospital in Hubli.
According to the police, the accident occurred around 11.45 a.m. when a lorry coming from Belgaum lost control and rammed another lorry parked by the side. At the same time, one more lorry coming from Bangalore lost control and collided with the two lorries. The police had a tough time clearing whatever had been left of the lorries.
Following the accident, vehicles lined up on both lanes for more than 1 km. The police had a difficult time in clearing the traffic jam.
Superintendent of Police of Dharwad district R. Dileep and other senior officers supervised the clearing operation.
