Two pilgrims were reportedly drowned in the River Godavari while taking a holy dip at two different places in West Godavari district during the Maha Sivaratri celebrations on Monday.
According to information, Mutyala Tulasisai (10) from Pedamallam under Achanta mandal was drowned while taking a bath in the river near their village. In a related incident in Kovvuru, Peruboyina Srinivas (22) of Chikkala under Chagallu mandal died in a similar manner. The bathing ghats at both the places lacked police presence as they were reportedly not notified by the administration. An unidentified aged woman fainted while waiting for her turn in a queue at Veerabhadraswamy Temple at Pattisam in Polavaram mandal. She was reportedly caught in a stampede in the queue due to heavy rush.
In Rajahmundry, an engineering student, who had ventured into the River Godavari to take a holy dip, was drowned. Pilla Surya Mani Teja (18) was a resident of the Vullithota area here.
In another incident near TTD ghat opposite Uma Markandeya temple, a woman left her one-week-old baby on the steps in the early hours.
