10,000 visitors thronged the Sri Aurobindo Ashram

Over 10,000 visitors are expected to have crossed the portals of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, to have a ‘darshan’ of the rooms of The Mother and Sri Aurobindo, on Thursday, to commemorate the 135{+t}{+h}birth anniversary of The Mother.

The day started off with a mass meditation, before the darshans started. People from different parts of the country, predominantly from Bengal and Orissa, arrived in Puducherry to take part in the event.

The Mother was born Mirra Alfassa, on February 21, 1878 in Paris, France.

She is believed to have known since she was eight that she was special and she is said to have had out-of-body experiences from the age of 13, according to a member of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram.

She first met Sri Aurobindo in 1914, when she stayed for a year in Pondicherry.

She then went to Japan and returned to Pondicherry in 1920. She received the name ‘The Mother’ in 1921.

In the early years of the ashram, The Mother would start the day at the balcony in the ashram to give her blessings to the people.

She would conduct a meditation session every evening.

In 1968, she founded Auroville, the ‘universal township’, which was her dream.

She passed away on November 17, 1973.
