A teacher of a private school here was arrested by the Police on Wednesday for his alleged act of sexual harassment of girl students of the school.

It is learnt that the teacher K. Padmanaban (42) who was handling Tamil classes was working in the school for the last 12 years.

Parents of students who were victims of Padmanaban’s harassment gheraoed the principal’s office on Tuesday.

The issue came to light when one of the girls told her mother about the issue, who in turn took it to the notice of Salem District Child Welfare Officer A. Devaki on Tuesday morning. By the time she reached the school, parents had thronged the principal’s office.

The parents complained to Ms. Devaki that the teacher sexually abused students – especially those who were in Class 8.

“Written complaints were received from the girls, based on which a complaint was lodged with the Ammapet Police”, Ms. Devaki told newsmen.

The Police registered a case against the teacher under Section 8 (Sexual Assault) and 10 (Aggravated Sexual Assault) of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012, on Wednesday. Padmanabhan and was produced before the Judicial Magistrate in Salem and lodged in the Salem Central Prison.

Dismissed

Chief Education Officer R. Eswaran who conducted an enquiry with the students and parents in person, on Wednesday, told The Hindu that the school dismissed him soon after the charges against him were proved.

“The management has also recommended the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Regional Office, Chennai, asking the authorities concerned to confiscate all his certificates,” he added.
