A safety and occupational health study on the Sivakasi’s fireworks industry is under way. Being carried out by the Union government’s Regional Labour Institute (RLI) here for the first time with the support of the State government, the study, covering nearly 700 fireworks units, will go on for a year, according to R. K. Elangovan, RLI Director. The study on safety and occupational health is done as per The Factories Act 1948 Section 91 (A).

It is part of the risk observatory established by the RLI recently.

Referring to a study he conducted a few years ago after a blast in a firework unit in Sivakasi, Dr. Elangovan said it brought to light unsafe working conditions and practices of some individuals. Following the study, the RLI held an exclusive training programme for employees and workers of the firework unit.

The risk observatory cell would carry out an assessment in zinc, power plant and LPG bottling plants.

The observatory has already conducted two safety audits in power plants of private and government sectors.
