The National Association of Street Vendors will hold nation-wide protests this Thursday to oppose the Union Government's decision to allow foreign direct investment in retail trade. The Association said on Monday that allowing FDI in retail would disrupt the livelihood of millions of street vendors and small retailers.

“Street vendors continue to be pushed around and evicted from their livelihood sites, but when it comes to protecting the interests of big multi-national retail companies, the Government runs the extra mile to allow these companies to take over the retail market space,” said Association spokesman Ranjit Abhigyan. The organisation said the entry of foreign companies would drive street vendors out of business.
