Additional efforts by the Education Department and teachers in Chikkodi Educational District paid rich dividends in the SSLC examinations, the results of which were announced on Monday. The district topped the State with 89.68 per cent passes.

According to official sources here on Tuesday, 31,929 students, of the 35,601 who appeared the exam, passed. As many as 2,122 students passed with distinction, 14,019 with first class and 7,067 passed with second class. Sajid Ahmed R. Dafedar of S.S. Patil English Medium High School, Sankeshwar, topped the district by scoring 618 out of 625 (98.88 per cent).

The Chikkodi Educational District had slipped to fifth position in the State in terms of pass percentage in the SSLC examination in 2012 from second place in 2011.

It took concerted efforts to improve the pass percentage — involving innovative methods of teaching and learning. The emphasis was on conducting regular classes, ensuring high attendance level, regular tests, compulsory tuitions and personal attention to “weak” students, solving question papers of at least four previous examinations and boosting the learning abilities of students, according to Deputy Director of Public Instruction D.M. Danoji.
