The Sri Lankan government has decided to keep a tab on tourists in the interest of security, said Keheliya Rambukwella, Media and Information Minister and government spokesperson, here on Thursday. Addressing press persons at the cabinet briefing, he said: “In the guise of tourists, certain elements which are adverse to the country’s security may be there.”
According to reports, the police have been asked to get details of tourists from various hotels. “This will help us maintain a database,” he said.
Observing that there were reports of South African groups peddling drugs, and certain groups involved in [the business of] arms and currency printing, Mr. Rambukwella said: “This [initiative] is only in the interest of the security of Sri Lanka.”
