Kavuri promises common facility centre for weavers at Siricilla
Union Textiles Minister Kavuri Sambasiva Rao has announced that a Common Facility Centre at Sircilla will be set up as part of integrated development of the proposed Sircilla Textile Cluster.
Mr. Sambasiva Rao who will be visiting Siricilla on November 12 to interact with weavers told media persons here on Monday there was immense potential for handloom/powerloom sector and the government would take necessary measures to promote the sector in a big way.
Earlier, he held a meeting with Textile department officials attended by Civil Supplies Minister D. Sridhar Babu, Karimnagar MP Ponnam Prabhakar and Siricilla MLA K.T. Ramarao.
Mr. Sambasiva Rao said various proposals, including establishing a mega handloom cluster at Siricilla, setting up a powerloom service centre, yarn depot, health insurance scheme for weavers, aggressive marketing facilities and promotion of handloom products were under government consideration. He said modernisation of powerlooms was also under the active consideration.
He said that he directed officials to submit a report by November 12 whether to go for new powerlooms or upgrade the existing ones and the required fund allocation for it.
Earlier, Mr. Ramarao submitted a representation to the Union Minister about the plight of powerloom industry and enhancement of services at Siricilla Textile Park. Of 70,000 powerlooms in the State, more than 36,000 were based out of Siricilla town and adjacent habitations. The powerloom industry was nothing but a power-based cottage industry where most households have an adjoining work-shed with four to 12 powerlooms, he said.
Mr.Ramarao urged the Union Minister that Siricilla town and adjoining rural mandal be declared as a Special Textile Zone for holistic development of powerloom sector and extension of subsidies and concessions to generate more employment. He also sought an apparel export park at the town.
