Solar parks to come up on dam sites

The State Water Resources Department has embarked upon an initiative to develop solar parks on the lands available with various irrigation projects.

To begin with, the department wants to tap solar energy on at least 1,000 acres of land in different projects.

Progress reviewed

Water Resources Minister M.B. Patil, who reviewed the progress of various irrigation projects here on Wednesday, asked officials to take forward the proposal on solar parks.

He said: “We have identified about 800 acres of land near Narayanapur reservoir built across the Krishna, 500 acres of land near Hidkal dam, 100 acres near Karanja project and another 100 acres of land near Gandori Nala project site in the northern parts of the State that are ideal for setting up solar parks,” he said.

These parks are proposed to be set up in collaboration with the Energy Department.

He also asked the officials to take up afforestation programme in the lands available with the department.

Both the solar energy projects and afforestation programme would help contribute to the cause of environment protection, he said.
