CHANDIGARH: The police claimed to have smashed a ga-ng of chain snatchers allegedly involved in over 70 cases of chain snatching in the region.

“Notorious for their snatching skills and fast bikes, the gang was operational for over two years during which it mostly targeted morning walkers,” said Inspector Prem Chand, who along with a team of the Cri-me Branch dressed as a morning walker to nab the gang early in the morning when they were allegedly attempting another chain snatch.

The accused were allegedly in possession of six gold chains and 17 mobile phones. According to the police, three members of the six-member gang have been arrested.

“Nadeem, who grew up in the city, knew the routes very well and was an expert motorcyclist and Vicky used to steal mobiles initially, but when they met in Burail Jail two years back they decided to join hands. They started with small thefts but they became more and more active in Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula,” said the police.

A case has been registered against them under Sections 399 and 402 IPC and the Arms Act.
