Fresh application for environment clearance soon

: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said here on Thursday that a fresh application seeking environment clearance for the proposed SmartCity Kochi would be moved within a fortnight.

The Hindu had reported on Wednesday that the State Expert Appraisal Committee (SEAC) had deferred its recommendation for environmental clearance for the first phase of the SmartCity Kochi on account of several factual errors and the absence of a specific plan in the proposal.

“The first phase of the project would be completed in two years, as per the understanding between the State government and the Dubai-based promoters of the project,” Mr. Chandy said, addressing mediapersons after inaugurating a workshop of government departments to recommend suggestions in the master plan.

He expected to receive environment clearance for the project within one-and-a-half months. The promoters had been asked to file a fresh application in a fool-proof manner for which all assistance would be provided, Mr. Chandy said.

The first phase of SmartCity Kochi will be launched within six months and it will come up on 50 acres, said SmartCity (India) managing director Baju George. A decision had been taken to make the execution of the project more Kochi-centric. . Marketing activities as a prelude to the construction of the first phase will be launched in February.

The master plan has been made more far-reaching on account of the delay in the execution of the project. It will now take into account the period up to 2050. The Chief Minister promised full support of the government to Abdullatif Al Mulla, business development director of Dubai Holding. The objective was speedy implementation of the project, he said.

Mr. Al Mulla said all hurdles to the project had been removed and it would be made a reality with the cooperation of the State government.

Meanwhile, SmartCity Kochi will have to wait longer to get a Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Chandy said that the government will take into account the opinion of the promoters as well in appointing a new CEO.
