A youth from Kerala, who was on a ‘Sivalaya Ottam,' a long-distance run passing through various Siva temples on Maha Sivarathri, drowned at the temple tank of Kalkulam Thirunainar Neelakandaswamy Temple at Padmanabhapuram on Monday.
According to police sources, Moni (26) of Anayara in Thiruvananthapuram district in Kerala came to Munchirai along with his friends in three motor-bikes to undertake the run.
They started their run by offering prayer at Thirumalai Mahadevar Temple at Munchirai after taking a holy dip in the Tamirabarani river.
They had to cover 12 shrines of Lord Siva to fulfill the ‘Sivalaya Ottam.'
They continued their ‘Ottam' after staying overnight at Thirparappu Mahadevar Temple and reached Padmanabhapuram in the morning where they took bath in the temple tank.
Though Moni was a swimmer, he is said to have developed cramps in his muscles while swimming from the mandapam situated in the middle of the tank to the bathing ghat.
He drowned before he could reach the ghat.
The police recovered his body and sent it for post-mortem examination to the government headquarters hospital, Thuckalay.
Further investigation is on.
