Shivabasavaiah, professor of zoology at the University of Mysore who has been placed under suspension following charges of sexual harassment against him by a Ph.D. student, surrendered before the police here on Wednesday.
He was produced before the court and granted bail on providing a surety of Rs. 10,000.
Prof. Shivabasavaiah claimed he was innocent and attributed the developments to a “well-planned conspiracy”. He said the entire episode was a fallout of a “conspiracy” hatched by his “good friends in the department” who could not stomach his rise and growth.
Prof. Shivabasavaiah said there was a time when Dalits in the department were neither encouraged nor taken into confidence while taking up any activity, and this changed after he took over as the head of the department. “This could not be digested by some and hence a conspiracy was hatched to frame me,” Prof. Shivabasavaiah said.
Prof. Shivabasavaiah appealed to the media to desist from character assassination and said he was only an accused and not yet pronounced guilty.
