The Shakti Bhatt Foundation has invited nominations for the 2009 Shakti Bhatt First Book Prize, which carries a prize money of Rs. 1 lakh and a trophy. Last year’s winner was Pakistani author Mohammed Hanif, for A Case of Exploding Mangoes.

Entries can be in any genre: poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction. All authors from the subcontinent are eligible but the books must be published in India in English or translated into English from an Indian language. Books that have been published elsewhere and have already won prizes are also eligible, but not ‘Vanity press’ publications.

A three-member advisory board will shortlist six books published between July 1, 2008 and June 30, 2009. These will go to a panel of judges. The winner will be announced in November.

The non-profit Foundation has been set up by the late writer-editor’s family.
