School students in the State may have to wait until the beginning of September before they get their new uniforms in hand. The cause is the procedural delay for implementing the e-tendering system for selection of textile suppliers. This time the government has gone for e-tendering for the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) scheme, where students, except boys who belong to the APL category, in government schools up to standard VIII are provided two free sets of uniform every year. The delay is also attributed to the additional extension of this scheme to benefit students of aided schools, which was recently announced by Education Minister P.K. Abdu Rabb. On Thursday, the committee headed by Director of Public Instructions (DPI) A. Shajahan finalised the guidelines regarding the e-tender and empanelling of textiles suppliers for the project. The School Management Committee (SMC) will be given the charge to place orders with the selected suppliers and further distribution in schools. Mr. Shajahan said there would be delay in the distribution of uniforms as directions to float e-tender for purchasing them were finalised only in the last week of May. — Staff Reporter
