The Supreme Court on Thursday expressed serious concern over the fresh outbreak of violence in Muzzafarnagar which resulted in the death of four persons.
A three-judge Bench of Chief Justice P. Sathasivam and Justices Ms. Ranjana Desai and Ranjan Gogoi referred to the statement made by the counsel for the Uttar Pradesh (U.P) government that Wednesday’s incident was not a communal clash but only a law and order problem. The Bench said, “If needed we may send an independent fact-finding team.” Not satisfied with the facilities in the relief camps, the Bench told the counsel, “the situation in relief camps is not what the State government is saying.”
The Bench was hearing a batch of petitions seeking transfer of cases from the Allahabad High Court to the apex court. It stayed the proceedings, issued notice to the U.P government and posted the matter for further hearing on November 21, along with other petitions.
