On January 15, Chamel Singh — a native of Jammu — succumbed to injuries sustained under mysterious circumstances within the prison premises.Local media reports said the preliminary postmortem report indicated that Chamel Singh had been tortured to death but this was denied by the Punjab Prisons Department. Rafiq Chaudhry, senior superintendent of Kot Lakhpat Jail, told the state-owned Associated Press of Pakistan that Chamel Singh had suffered a stroke in prison and died on the way to the hospital.
Authorities alerted PTI reports: Leading rights activist Ansar Burney said that he had written to the President, Prime Minister and federal Interior Ministry in January to increase security for Sarabjit after Chamel Singh’s death. “Sarabjit told me and a CID [Crime Investigation Department] official after the execution of Afzal Guru that a prisoner in Kot Lakhpat Jail had issued death threats. I brought this to the knowledge of prison authorities and the Punjab Home Department but they did not beef up his security,” Awais Sheikh, Sarabjit’s counsel, told PTI.
